FTP (File Uploads)
These details only relate to file uploads using FTP type uploads. If using FrontPage Extensions, you will need to Publish your files using the built-in Publishing feature within Microsoft FrontPage. Please refer to separate details when using FrontPage.
In order to upload your web pages to our server, you will need to use some FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software.* If you don't already have FTP software, you can download for free from our Support Centre main page for different computer platforms (e.g. Mac and Linux, although Linux normally comes with at least one FTP program already installed).
All accounts are provided with FTP access as standard and your welcome email provides details of your FTP server address (host name) for uploads. Your index or default page and web files should be uploaded into the htdocs server folder.
When using FTP software there are various settings that you will need to enter to connect to the FTP server. These settings are as follows:
Host Name/Address: ftp.yourdomain.com
User ID: yourdomain.com
Password: your password
Host Type: Auto-Detect
Port: 21
Transfer Type: Auto-Detect**
PSV or Passive mode must be enabled in your FTP software.
ASCII files include plain text files (with the extension .txt) and also include web pages (with the extensions .htm, .html, .shtml, .ihtml, .php, etc.), Perl / CGI files (.pl and .cgi) and ASP (.asp). Some files used with scripts may also need to be uploaded in ASCII mode, i.e. .dat text-based data files, .cfg configuration files, etc. Please check with your script supplier.
Binary files include images (.jpg, .gif, .png), program files (.exe), audio files (au, wav, mp3, etc.) and compressed files (.zip) etc.
You can also upload files in other file formats such as Mac and Linux file types.
* If you have FrontPage Extensions installed on your account, then FTP should not be used to upload your files. Instead you should use your FrontPage software to Publish your pages.
** FTP transfer types can either be in ASCII or Binary
