How to configure Spam Filtering
This article describes how to set-up Spam filtering on one of your POP3 mailboxes. Spam filtering is a new service that automatically removes those unwanted, and unsolicited junk emails.
Step 1: From the Email settings section in your Control Panel, select the POP3 mailbox from the pull-down menu for the email address you want to set up with Spam Filtering, and click the View/Edit button. Then click on the Spam Filtering link on the next page.
Providing you have the Spam Filtering Option installed on your account, the next page will take you onto the Spam Filter Configuration page as shown below:

2 - Select the strength of Spam filtering you want to use by choosing the appropriate level from the Filter Level drop-down list.
We recommend that you use the default level of 5 to begin with. If you get too many Spam emails, increase the level. Similarly, if the Spam filtering is removing messages that you want to receive then reduce the level. By trial and error you will find the best setting for you.
3 - Use the If spam detected drop-down list to select the action you want taken when Spam email is detected. You can either have the subject line altered to indicate it is Spam (i.e. -----SPAM----- Spam Email Subject), or have the email deleted from the mail server.
4 - If you want to be absolutely sure that certain emails will never be treated as Spam, you can create a list of emails that will be excluded from the Spam filtering. Enter a full or partial email address into the appropriate text box, and click on the Add button. You can use the '*' character to specify a range of email addresses. For example '*@goodcompany.com' means that all emails from the domain 'goodcompany.com' will not be Spam filtered.
5 - You can also set-up a list of emails that will always be treated as Spam. Enter a full or partial email address into the appropriate text box, and click on the Add button. You can use the '*' character to specify a range of email addresses. For example '*@badcompany.com' means all emails from the domain 'badcompany.com' will be treated as Spam.
6 - Select the Apply to all mailboxes option if you want these Spam settings to be applied to all of your POP3 mailboxes that have the Spam Filtering option installed.
7 - Click on the Update Spam Filtering button to save the settings. The Configure Spam Filter page re-appears with a message indicating that the Spam filter has been updated successfully.
8 - Click on the Cancel button to quit the Spam Configuration page. The POP3 Mailbox Settings page appears.
One important point that should be noted is that spam filtering works on an email address, not on a domain or a mailbox.
Mail that will be filtered:
- Mail sent directly to the email address
- Mail forwarded externally to the email address
Mail that won't be filtered:
- Mail sent an alias domain on our system
- Mail forwarded internally from one mail box to another
- Mail forwarded by aliases - including the nobody alias
This service is supplied as an Advanced Mailbox which includes virus scanning and spam filtering.
